History

In 1999, a group of ballet teachers meets and discusses the need to improve the level of artistic dance in Nicosia. The search for opportunities for the development of talented students and the need to take their training at another level resulted in the requirement of upgrading this art form, and led to the establishment of the Lefkosia Youth Ballet. The institution of the first  Board of Directors was deemed necessary for the fulfillment of the objective of the Lefkosia Youth Ballet and consisted of:

President: Clare Andreou
Vice-President: Elena Maxouti
Secretary: Annita Hadjieftichiou
Treasury: Avgi Papakyriakou
Member: Alexia Petridou

Lefkosia Youth Ballet was founded in 1999 as a non-profit organization, and its purpose is to encourage and support talented young dancers, to further develop their skills and artistry. Additionally the Lefkosia Youth Ballet aims to further develop dance and arts in the capital, by producing high-quality dance performances. Throughout the years, Lefkosia Youth Ballet, which relies heavily on the volunteer work of its board and teacher members, has developed a magnitude of activities that are solely focused on the further development of the children inside the company. Our students are encouraged to learn to work as a team, further develop their classical and contemporary technique, gain stage experience and on-stage artistry.

The first audition in 1999 successfully admitted 5 students into the company, and throughout the years, the numbers grew. Today, the Lefkosia Youth Ballet is comprised of 32 young dancers. Each year, depending on the needs of the company, auditions are held for other children to join our performances in supporting roles, and to work under the guidance of the Lefkosia Youth Ballet. Since 1999, one of the main wishes of the members was to be able to give the principal roles to Cypriot dancers, and today we can proudly say we have achieved our goal.
